AKC Canine Good Citizen (CGC)

All dogs, including both purebred and mixed breed dogs are welcome to participate in the American Kennel Club (AKC) Canine Good Citizen Program.

This class meets for 6 weeks with an option to evaluate for the CGC title for dogs that are ready.  Each class meeting is 55 minutes in length.  Successful completion of an evaluation is needed for the CGC title.  Not all dogs are ready to evaluate with just one class session.  Your instructor will let you know when you and your dog are ready.

Badger Kennel Club Canine Good Citizen Class

Our instructors use positive reinforcement training techniques. Canine Good Citizen is a certification program developed by the AKC that is designed to reward the owners of dogs who are well mannered both at home and in the community. BKC instructors will provide training and help you prepare for the 10 test items you and your dog must pass to get your AKC CGC certificate and title. These test items include:

  • Accepting a friendly stranger
  • Sitting politely for petting
  • Appearance and grooming
  • Walking on a loose lead
  • Walking through a crowd
  • Sitting and laying down on command including staying in place on command
  • Coming when called
  • Walking past a neutral dog
  • Reaction to a distraction
  • Supervised separation

For more information visit the AKC Canine Good Citizen Program. Download a CGC brochure, print the CGC Participants Guide or watch a video of an actual CGC test….. plus much more!

Class Requirements

  • It is recommended for dogs and handlers to have taken Beginning Family Dog Training or have similar prior training.
  • Many dogs in this class are over age 2 although younger dogs with focus can also join the class.
  • Treats may be used in class but NOT at the evaluation.
  • Training collars may NOT be used for the evaluation and so we recommend flat buckle collars during this class.
